Photogenic is a game-changing and revolutionary all-in-one hair styling product. Answers to these frequently asked questions are meant to guide you in achieving your best results but shouldn’t negate the decades of knowledge you’ve acquired about your personal hair and what it responds well to. Photogenic is just the “means,” but you have to make it do what it do.
I’ve tried a million different other products. What makes Photogenic different?
Exactly. From moisturizing leave-in conditioners, oils, and styling gels to products claiming to provide curl definition, reduce shedding, and repair damage, you can be left wondering which products and what combinations will work for you. You could end up investing hundreds, maybe thousands, of dollars collecting countless products that remain unused because they failed to provide you with the results you had expected.
Photogenic is an all-in-one leave-in conditioner, sealer, styling gel, blowout cream, growth serum, damage repairer, and hair strengthener that replaces any other styling products you’ll ever need.
I can buy other products for about $10. Why does Photogenic cost so much more?
Photogenic is a salon quality product. For $35, you receive a whopping 32 oz. That’s 3 to 16 times the amount you’d normally receive from other companies. In order to achieve the results you get from just one jar of Photogenic, you would need to buy multiple products. Also, when you order more than one jar at a time of Photogenic, you get an instant discount! Photogenic is a true money saver.
How will I know if Photogenic will work for me?
The best way to know if Photogenic will work for you is to give it a try. However, if you’re skeptical of buying one more product, join our Facebook community and see the results and testimonials from people just like you who share your hair type and goals.
My wash day routine takes all day. Can I expect to save time using Photogenic?
Yes. Photogenic allows you to detangle as you apply, which will cut down the time spent finger detangling dry hair or pre-pooing (an oil treatment done prior to shampooing and conditioning). Also, once you’ve begun using Photogenic, you will experience a reduction in tangles and single strand knots that normally occur due to dryness. Photogenic can reduce your wash day time significantly, leaving you more time to be great!
Does Photogenic promote hair growth, help to retain length, and encourage thickness?
Yes. On average, most people’s hair grows half an inch per month. Scalp health and genetics also can have an impact on how quickly and how long your hair will grow. However, Photogenic has been proven to fill in and thicken thinning hair, especially along the hairline, promote length retention, and reduce hair shedding. Before I created Photogenic, I would lose handfuls of hair each wash day. Healthy, moisturized hair is less prone to breakage. With Photogenic, you will retain more of your hair as it grows, and you’ll achieve those length goals you’ve always dreamed of!
Will Photogenic make my hair feel greasy or hard?
No. Natural hair thrives on moisture. The first ingredient in Photogenic is water, and one application provides your hair with all the moisture it needs. This is why you can apply Photogenic to dry hair and still achieve lustrous and amazing results. When correctly applied, your hair will feel soft and moisture rich. Even though Photogenic is a replacement for your styling gel, it will not produce a hard or crunchy feel that products that contain certain kinds of alcohol do. Some alcohols found in other products wick moisture from your hair, which causes the cuticle to roughen and leaves your hair dry, brittle, and frizzy. Photogenic contains water and penetrating oils. You’ll get all the curl definition and none of the crunch!
Can I use Photogenic on color treated and permed hair?
Yes. Adding chemicals to your hair can weaken or denature your protein strands, leaving them prone to breakage. Photogenic helps to strengthen your hair, reversing some of those chemical effects, and because it conditions the hair so well, you may not even be able to tell that your hair has been chemically treated. Our permed customers have reported using Photogenic as a deep conditioner before proceeding with their normal shampoo and conditioning routine.
I have heat damage. Will Photogenic still make my hair curly?
Heat damage is characterized by hair that fails to return to its natural state when wet. Depending on the amount of damage, curls can appear looser or even completely straight. Your hair is also prone to dryness and breakage due to split ends and damaged cuticles. Unfortunately severe heat damage can be irreparable. However, moisture can help to repair your hair. One of the main results of heat damage is excessive drying, so your hair desperately needs as much moisture as possible to regenerate its health. Photogenic’s moisture rich properties can help you back on the road to healthy hair!
I just big chopped my hair. Does Photogenic work on short hair?
Yes. No matter what stage you’re in on your hair journey, Photogenic can work for you.
How long will it take before I see hair growth?
Individual results may vary. We have had customers notice growth in as little as one week.
Does Photogenic work well on fine hair?
Yes. Photogenic plumps and thickens even the finest strands. It also grows thinning hair and allows it to look fuller in the process. But don’t take my word of it. See what our customers have to say!
Has anyone with thinning hair tried this product? If so, what were the results?
Yes. Just read these customer testimonials!
“My brother was thinning/balding in his crown and after a few weeks' use, to his great surprise, it filled in nicely. I've been using it maybe 6 weeks. I am cautiously optimistic. My hair seems to be thickening.”
“I've never posted so much in my life, but that's what happens when I find something that works—I just gotta tell everybody! I stopped relaxing my hair because it was getting thinner. It thickened up some just by going natural, but I think it's growing even more now. And there's much less loss of hair on wash day!”
Does this work well on biracial hair?
Yes. Photogenic works on all hair and curl types. Whether you are 3C or a 4C natural, Photogenic can work for you!
Can men use Photogenic?
We men want to look good too! Photogenic has a pleasant yet non-floral scent that works for both men and women. You can also use Photogenic to moisturize beards and facial hair as well.
Is Photogenic an all-natural product? Is it safe to use on my children?
Photogenic is a completely nontoxic product. The ingredients include: water, shea butter, soy and wheat proteins, mango seed, aloe, avocado oil, kernel oil, neem seed, hibiscus flower, carrot oil, vitamin E, and olive oil. However, Photogenic does contain some synthetic chemicals commonly used in food and cosmetics to prevent water from separating from oil components. You can safely use it on children of any age.
Can I use Photogenic on my clips-ins and extensions?
Yes. Photogenic works on all hair types, including human and synthetic hair extensions.
Can this product be used on Caucasian hair?
Yes! Whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly, or kinky, Photogenic can work for you!
I have problems with dry, itchy scalp. Can Photogenic help?
Yes. Due to Photogenic’s amazing moisturizing effect, we have customers reporting an elimination of dry, itchy scalp.
How long does a jar of Photogenic last?
How long a jar will lasts depends on your hair and how often you use it. The product is meant to be applied extremely liberally, which is why we provide you with such a large amount of product per jar. Personally, I have long, super thick hair and use about a jar every 2 ½ weeks. But remember, Photogenic replaces your leave-in conditioner, sealer, and all your styling products, so make sure that you use enough to get the desired results.
What is the life expectancy of an opened and unopened jar?
Photogenic is good for at least 18 months, if stored at room temperature.
Where can I purchase Photogenic? Is it available in stores?
We currently sell exclusively through our website.
Is there a jar recycling program? What about biodegradable containers eventually?
We do not have a formal jar recycling program, but we encourage our customers to recycle or repurpose their jars.
Does Photogenic come in any other sizes?
Eventually we plan on providing Photogenic in various sizes. However, at present, we want to perfect first, then expand. Sign up for our newsletter so that you can stay up to date with all our latest announcements.
How can I get my Photogenic through TSA?
According to the TSA, you are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes through the checkpoint. These are limited to 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. This is also known as the 3-1-1 liquids rule.
You can either travel with your Photogenic in your checked luggage or put it in a 3 oz. container or smaller. However, more than 3 oz. is required for a complete application. We suggest doing a full application before your trip and bringing a small amount of Photogenic along to keep your curls poppin’! You can mix one tablespoon of product with 8 oz. of water in a spray bottle for daily refreshes. This will definitely stretch the small amount of product allowed. You can also bring multiple 3 oz. containers to sustain you during longer trips.
Do you have a refer-a-friend program?
We are currently working on it. Sign up for the newsletter to find out when the program will go into effect.
Do you have any tips and tricks to share?
Yes. And too many to list here. Check out our tutorials and join the Photogenic Facebook community to learn how to take your hair to the next level.
Does Photogenic have any other uses other than moisturizing and styling my hair?
Photogenic can be used to train and thicken eyebrows, condition beards, and as a UV protectant on skin. And probably some other uses we haven’t discovered yet!
Do you have any Photogenic merchandise available and business cards so that we can share the information with friends and family?
Sign up for our newsletter so we can let you know when merchandising and referral cards become available.
Do I apply Photogenic to wet, damp, or dry hair?
All of the above. When Photogenic is applied to wet hair, you are likely to experience more shrinkage. For more stretched curls, apply to hair when it is dry or slightly damp. This product can do anything, and each customer uses it differently because we all have different hair and seek different results. I encourage you to experiment with it.
I have silver/gray hair. Will Photogenic change the color of my gray?
Photogenic has a brown tint to provide UV protection. Photogenic can darken your grays if you want it to. Just apply generously straight from the jar. Many people like this because it extends the time between colorings. However, if you don’t want to alter the color of your gray hair, simply rub Photogenic in the palms of your hands before applying, and it turns into a white cream that won’t leave any color or residue whatsoever once dry.
Do I need to use any other products along with Photogenic?
Once you’ve experienced Photogenic, you may find that it works well in conjunction with some other hair care product. However, Photogenic was designed as a one-step solution to all your hair care needs.
I applied Photogenic to my hair and set them in twist overnight. In the morning, the product is still brown and flaky and my hair is dry! Did I used too much or what?
You may not have worked Photogenic completely into your hair. We suggest using the “shingle method” (see our tutorials for a demonstration) to ensure that the product coats each strand and doesn’t just sit on top of your hair. You should also allow your hair to completely dry before taking down twist or braids to achieve the best results.
My hair looked great when I applied Photogenic to my wet hair, but now that it’s dry, it looks like a puff? What am I doing wrong?
Make sure you’re using enough product and that you apply from the scalp to the ends of the hair for consistent coverage. Also, when you apply Photogenic to shoulder length hair, make sure the product isn’t absorbed by movement/friction with your shirt/neck. To correct this issue, reseal your ends and either loosely pin up your hair or cover your shoulders with a fabric that does not promote friction until it dries.
I love photogenic on my hair, but why does my hair feel hard. What am I doing wrong?
The dry hair issues typically occur for two reasons: (1) when you lie down on your hair when it isn’t completely dry, the hair dries together (Photogenic works as a hair gel); or (2) enough product was not added at application, so it doesn’t dry as moisturized as you would like. Just add more.
I apply a lot of Photogenic because I want my thick coarse hair to be really defined. But, in some sections where my hair is really curly, the product gets stuck in my curls, which leads to knots. What could I be doing wrong?
It is possible to apply too much Photogenic. This issue likely results from applying the product a bit too heavily in a particular spot or reapplying Photogenic instead of reactivating the product already on your hair with water. Just mist your hair lightly, let the water absorb for a few minutes, and then run your fingers down your curls from root to end to evenly distribute all the product in your hair.
People keep saying that the porosity of my hair matters. What does this mean?
Your hair’s porosity not only affects the way it looks (e.g., shine, dullness) but it also affects the way your hair absorbs and retains product. High porosity hair absorbs moisture quickly but also can leech moisture and become dry when not properly sealed. Low porosity hair has strands that are difficult to penetrate and therefore product may rest on top of the hair.
To determine your hair’s porosity, it’s best to examine your hair when you are washing it. Saturate your hair in the shower for a few minutes. Some areas of your hair may take longer to absorb moisture than other parts. This is where you will see that the sections that are pliable and feel full of water have a higher porosity than the parts that are still frizzy and don’t look and feel heavy.
Photogenic works on all hair type. However, application will vary depending on the porosity of your hair. Low porosity hair or sections may need to be damp prior to application so that the product is fully absorbed.
How do you apply Photogenic to your hair? Are you just putting some in your palm and working it in or are you parting your hair and putting the products on section by section?
We suggest applying Photogenic section by section using the “shingle method” (see our tutorials for a demonstration).
When you use Photogenic on straight hair, do you use it like a hair conditioner and rinse it out?
Photogenic can be left on straight hair like a leave-in conditioner or rinsed out like a deep conditioner. It’s really up to you which method works best at achieving the results you want.
I have 4B/4C hair. Will I be able to achieve a defined curl pattern using Photogenic?
The amount of curl you experience will be dependent on the health of your hair when you begin using Photogenic. Healthy hair will achieve far more dramatic results than damaged hair. However, over time, as Photogenic conditions and repairs your hair, you should see increased curl definition even in 4B/4C hair. Many of our customers had never realized they had a curl pattern before using Photogenic!
Will Photogenic cause a lot of shrinkage?
Photogenic actually reduces shrinkage. However, the amount of shrinkage you experience is determined by how the product is applied. If your desired effect is reduced shrinkage, apply Photogenic liberally to dry hair and be sure to add a sufficient amount of product to your ends, which will help in stretching your curls as it dries.
Is Photogenic only good for wash and gos?
Photogenic creates amazing wash n go, blowout, twist, twist out, plaited, braid out, bantu knot results. You can use Photogenic to achieve any style you want!
I normally wear my hair in a high puff or an afro. Can I still achieve these styles using Photogenic?
Yes. For an afro with amazing curl definition, just apply Photogenic to wet hair to allow your curls to shrink to their tightest coil.
Can I use Photogenic for styling blown out natural hair?
Yes. Please watch the following tutorials for a detailed explanation of the process.

I bought Photogenic, but I’m not seeing the results I expected. Am I doing something wrong? Can someone help me?
There are several ways to use Photogenic. We rarely get complaints, but when we do, we usually are able to resolve the issue by helping the customer use the product better to achieve the desired result. Watching our tutorials should help immensely. If not, we can set up a one-on-one online consultation with our stylist to guide you with using the product on your hair.
Do I need to keep my hair in a protective style during hot, cold, and humid weather?
If you enjoy wearing your hair in twists and braids, then Photogenic can help you with those styling goals. However, once Photogenic is applied, it moisturizes and conditions continually making it the ultimate protective style even when you’re wearing your hair out. You’ll no longer have to worry about the sun or cold drying out your hair or humidity ruining a style.
Does Photogenic work with locs and braids?
Yes. You can use Photogenic to tame flyaways and frizz on braided and loc’ed hair. My nephew has locs. We’ve been using only Photogenic for a little over a year to twist his hair. Photogenic keeps his locs conditioned, and his hair has grown a ton! However, I recommend getting under a dryer, if you usually use a dryer, when conditioning your locs, as dense hair does take a very long time to dry. You should use Photogenic between loc sessions to keep hair conditioned. Photogenic doesn’t loc hair, but will keep those mature locs looking healthy and amazing!
Can I still go to the salon and get my hair styled? Can I take Photogenic with me?
Yes. You have now found a hair product that you love that helps you achieve all your hair goals. You should always feel empowered to let your stylist know what you’d like done to your hair and which products you want used.
After applying, can I sit under the dryer to speed up the process?
I usually do braid outs on damp hair. So should I braid my hair immediately after application or let it dry first? I would like my hair to be dry by morning. Is sitting under a dryer an option?
Braid your hair immediately after applying Photogenic. You can apply the product in sections and plait as you go. Smaller plaits will decrease your drying time, but you can sit under the dryer to speed the process.
I have had my hair in a protective style for a year. I shampoo, deep condition, stretch, braid and crochet my hair once a month. Can I use Photogenic in my hair before stretching? And if so, will it help with my protective style?
Applying Photogenic prior to putting your hair in a long-term protective style will yield even greater results than styling alone. Photogenic will condition and moisturize your hair while your hair is protected. However, styles should still be taken down within a reasonable time so that the scalp and hair can be washed and Photogenic can be reapplied.
How long will it take my hair to completely dry?
Drying time depends on the length and density of your hair. However, on average, hair should be dry overnight.
How do I maintain my hair between wash days?
1) Do a light or generous water mist—however much your hair needs to get you back to your optimum moisture level. Work the water through with your hands.
2) If your hair still doesn't rehydrate enough after the water mist, run a little bit more product through the hair, taking care to focus on the ends.
If these two steps don't work, only then use trial and error to see what else may assist, but I promise that for the majority of you, these are going to be the only steps that you need to rehydrate the hair and reactivate the product. Photogenic is definitely low maintenance; it's just not "no" maintenance.
How should I maintain my hair at night?
Depending on the length of your hair, you can put your hair into a pineapple (i.e., a loose ponytail on top of your head) and wrap it with a satin scarf before bed. Or simply sleep with a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase.
I applied Photogenic on wash day and the next day my hair felt dry. Do I have to apply Photogenic daily?
Try misting with water first to reactive the product already in your hair. Only if your hair still feels dry should you apply more product to your ends and problem areas.
Do I have to detangle my hair after each touch up or wash?
Once you’ve applied Photogenic correctly, your hair will stay detangled, especially if you wash your hair in sections.
How many days can I expect the effects of Photogenic to last?
This depends on you and how much you apply on wash day. The more Photogenic you use to condition your hair on wash day, the longer your styles will last. I typically maintain my hair every day, but the maintenance only takes 2–3 minutes. If you need more, add more. Photogenic is very simple to use!
Does Photogenic run when you're sweating or working out?
No. The humidity and moisture created by your sweat will actually reactive Photogenic, keeping your hair soft and bouncy throughout your workouts!

Do you have expedited shipping?
All orders are shipped through USPS Priority mail.
I don’t live in the United States. Can I still order Photogenic?
